Heute verschlafe ich richtig. Erst gegen acht Uhr wache ich auf. Da ich schon so spät dran bin, fahre ich gleich zum Restaurant unterhalb vom Motel. Dann brauche ich nicht extra zurück laufen. Das Frühstück ist sehr gut. Zuerst wundere ich mich noch, warum es nur eine Scheibe Toast gibt. Aber dann sehe ich, dass die gut doppelt so dick ist wie eine normale Scheibe. Zwei normale Scheiben wären mir zwar lieber, aber so ist es auch okay.

Gegen halb elf fahre ich zum Tanken, dann geht es endlich los, wieder einmal viel zu spät.

Erst gegen Mittag komme ich beim Craters of the Moon National Monument an. Hier besuche ich als erstes das Visitor Center.

Dann geht es zum Parkeingang, bei dem erst die $8 Eintritt kassiert werden. Jetzt geht es auf die Loop Road, die nur in einer Richtung gefahren werden kann. Also muss ich auch meine geplante Tour umdrehen.

Ich beginne mit den Spatter Cones und dem Snow Cone. Dann marschiere ich noch ein Stück den North Crater Trail, der mich am Grat entlang der beiden großen Krater, den Big Craters, vorbeiführt. Hier hat man eine tolle Aussicht in den Krater und die bizarre Lavalandschaft außen herum. Den Trail hatte ich nicht geplant, aber der war es wert!

Hier geht es zuerst durch ein Lava–Feld und dann in die offene Prärie. Immer wieder geht es an kleinen Kratern vorbei bis zu den Lava Trees. Dies sind versteinerte Überreste von Bäumen. Von dort führt der Weg noch ein ganzes Stück weiter. Doch ich beende den Trail am Echo Crater. Wider Erwarten steht da kein Schild oder Hinweis wie bei den Lava Trees. Aber die zwei Wanderer, die mir entgegen gekommen sind, sind noch ein Stück dem Weg gefolgt, der anscheinend noch ewig weiter führt. Aber da kam nichts mehr. Und der Berg sieht wie ein Krater aus — und ein Echo gibt es auch. Also haben sie es als Echo Crater definiert, klingt plausibel.

Ich schließe mich der Definition an und steige, wie die Beiden, zum Kraterrand hinauf und mache ein paar Aufnahmen. Dann geht es zurück. So langsam brauen sich in den Bergen ganz schöne Wolken zusammen und ich habe schon etwas Bedenken, ob ich wirklich trocken zum Auto komme. Aber es sieht so aus, als ob es kein Problem ist. Der Trail ist ziemlich lang. Um dreiviertel drei bin ich losmarschiert und gegen viertel nach sechs bin ich zurück am Auto. Dabei hat der Wind ganz schön gepfiffen. Vor allem bei dem North Crater Trail, als ich oben am Krater gewandert bin, hat es einen fast umgeblasen. Und meine Kamera hat manchmal ganz schön gewackelt. Die musste ich festhalten, damit sie nicht in den Krater gefallen ist!

Dann fahre ich zurück zur Loop Road.

Auf der Loop Road geht es jetzt in Richtung Parkausgang. Da es schon so spät ist, wandere ich auf keinem Trail mehr. Ich bin auf dem Weg zurück zum Motel in Idaho Falls.

Wieder geht es durch Arco in Idaho.

Auf dem Weg zurück höre ich schon die Wetterwarnung vom National Weather Service auf meinem CB–Radio: Über Pocatello gibt es extreme Gewitter mit bis zu 100km/h Wind. Das Unwetter zieht nach Nordosten weiter. Das sollte mich nicht weiter betreffen. Aber den Wind spüre ich doch. Mich bläst es fast von der Straße. Immer wenn ich im Windschatten eines Hügels fahre, merke ich erst, wie weit ich gegenlenken muss, damit ich in der Spur bleibe, unglaublich!

Aber ich komme wohlbehalten am Motel an. Auch hier pfeift der Wind ganz schön. Doch es regnet nicht. Es ist bereits viertel nach acht. Also packe ich schleunigst meine Sachen zusammen und gehe aufs Zimmer. Da wasche ich mich noch schnell, dann fahre ich wieder ins Outback. Dieses mal setze ich mich in die Lounge Area. Aber da muss man sich den Platz selbst nehmen. Auch mein Ober ist nicht so toll, wenngleich der Service ganz okay ist. Allerdings kommt er mit der Frage wegen der Nachspeise, als ich noch mitten beim Essen bin und legt gleich die Rechnung hin. Da kommt man sich fast schon rausgeschmissen vor.

Ich bezahle und marschiere hinaus. Da sehe ich, dass ich wohl der letzte Gast war. Anscheinend sperren die auch eher zu, wenn nichts los ist. Na klasse, wenn dann wirklich jemand später vorbeikommt, steht er vor verschlossener Tür. So viel zum Thema Service. Mal schauen, wenn morgen die Zeit reicht, fahre ich zum Texas Roadhouse. Da war ich dieses Jahr noch gar nicht.

Nach dem Essen fahre ich weiter zum Walmart. Gegen viertel nach neun komme ich dort an. Aber so wie es aussieht, sperren die gegen 10 Uhr zu, also keine 24h. Da muss ich mich beeilen. Zuerst hole ich mir DV–Filmkassetten. Die haben wenigstens wieder meine Panasonic. Acht Stück reichen hoffentlich. Dann plündere ich wieder die CD–Abteilung. Allerdings bin ich mir bei manchen CDs nicht sicher, ob die etwas sind und lasse sie dann doch liegen. Aber die von Gloriana, einer neuen Gruppe, die gerade in die Charts nach oben klettert und überall gespielt wird, gibt es für $10. Die nehme ich gleich mit.

Gegen zehn geht es zurück ins Motel. Da mache ich als erstes meine Buchführung und lege die CDs ein, die ich noch im Rückstand habe. Dann tippe ich mein Tagebuch. Da ich morgen keine neuen GPS–Punkte brauche, entfällt schon mal diese Eingabe. Schließlich ist es doch schon wieder halb zwölf. Also prüfe ich heute keine Filme mehr, sondern gehe ins Bett. Das wird sowieso zwölf, bis ich fertig bin und die Stöpsel im Ohr habe…
